Avienne still in race for Hard Rock festival slot local music highlights

Detroit alternative rockers Avienne could land a slot at the Hard Rock Calling music festival in London, but the band needs your online votes to get there. You can catch the group tonight at the Hard Rock Café in Detroit, where friends and fans will gather to show their support. The appearance is tied to the Ambassadors of Rock contest in which bands from North America have been battling it out for a coveted slot at Hard Rock Calling, set for London's Hyde Park at the end of June with a star-heavy lineup that includes Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Pearl Jam. Avienne has advanced through several stages of competition, including surviving the most recent cut in front of a panel of judges that included Little Steven of the legendary E Street Band. "We've never been in a competition as fierce as this," says guitarist Matt Justice. "All the bands we played with were stellar." Now Avienne is among 10 finalists from across North America and the band's fate is in the hands of fans. Online votes are being collected through midnight Sunday, so there's still time to get your votes in. Band members met at South Lyon High School in 2007 and began writing songs, playing shows and breaking into the local scene. Avienne won a series of battle-of-the-bands contests and used the prize money to record a debut album, which was released last fall. The six-piece band -- Mike Tooman (keys, vocals), Justice (lead guitar), Kentaro Roy (violin, mandolin), Chris Fader(rhythm guitar), Tyler Mattiello (bass) and Justin Smith(drums) -- creates a really big alt-rock sound with two-, three- and four-part harmonies.

"We're all huge fans of the Beatles," says Justice. "They're the greatest band in the history of rock music. To play on the same stage as Paul McCartney would be such an honor."

Hard Rock Calling adds Sunday acts

Crosby Stills and Nash have been confirmed as appearing second on festival bill on Sunday. Crowded House will also be joining the list of acts confirmed. New Zealand born frontman Neil Finn, commented, "This is a day that I wouldn't want to miss for all the tea in China. I will be hearing songs from the masters McCartney, Crosby, Stills & Nash that I sang as a child and emulated as a teenager, and Elvis who laid down the gauntlet to all of us as we formed our bands. The scene is set, great music both modern and timeless.... and, God as if that wasn't good enough, we get to play too!" Elvis Costello takes to the Hard Rock Calling stage for the first time when he returns to the UK for a few selected performances this summer.
Headlining the Pepsi Max Stage will be acoustic singer-songwriter Joshua Radin, and also confirmed for that stage are Tiffany Page, Lissie, The Coronas, and Joe Echo. Also appearing on Pepsi Max Stage will be Little Steven's Underground Garage Revue, featuring The Breakers, Cocktail Slippers, Len Price 3, and hosted by Steven Van Zandt himself. Pearl Jam headlining on the Friday night Stevie Wonder headlining on Saturday, and Paul McCartney headlining the Sunday. Paul McCartney to answer fans' questions in live webchat

Paul McCartney will chat live with fans via a web chat on May 20, announced the artist's website on May 19. Beginning at 12:00pm EST (5:00pm GMT), McCartney will spend 20 minutes answering questions from his studio in Sussex.

Hard Rock Calling Tickets - Bella Union curate bandstand at Hard Rock Calling

Hard Rock Calling has announced ten new bands for this year's line-up, all of which will perform on the Bella Union-curated bandstand.

Beach House, Here We Go Magic and Lone Wolfhave all got the nod for the June event with My Sad Captains, Mountain Man and The Morning Benders also confirmed.

Pearly Gate Music, John Grant, Zun Zun Egui and the secretive boy-girl duo Summer Camp will also appear over the weekend with days and times to be unveiled nearer the time.

Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Pearl Jam will headline the weekend with support from Jamiroqui,James Morrison and Corinne Bailey Rae also confirmed.

“Alive” is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. “Alive” was Pearl Jam’s first single, and appeared on the band’s debut album, Ten (1991). Written by guitarist Stone Gossard, “Alive” originated as an instrumental titled “Dollar Short” and was included on a demo tape circulated in hopes of finding a singer for the group. Vocalist Eddie Vedder obtained a copy of the tape and wrote lyrics that describe a fictionalized account of the time when he was told that the man he thought was his father was not actually his biological parent. It’s guitar solo is ranked 44 on Guitar World’s “100 Greatest Guitar Solos”.


“Alive” charted at number 16 in the UK (the single was available only through import in the US). A remixed version of the song was included on Pearl Jam’s 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991–2003). Although the song was not a huge hit upon its release (peaking at number 16 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart), it has endured as a fan favorite and a staple of rock radio since then, as well as one of the most requested songs at the band’s concerts.


“Alive” features an extended guitar solo after its third chorus (3:38), which is likely one reason it’s a favorite of so many fans. The solo for “Alive”, performed by McCready, was ranked number 44 on Guitar World’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Solos”, and number 26 on Total Guitar’s list of the “100 Hottest Guitar Solos”. Interestingly, when interviewed about his famous solo, McCready was quick to disclaim creative credit for it, saying he basically “copied Ace Frehley’s solo from ‘She’, which was copied from Robby Krieger’s solo in The Doors’ ‘Five to One’.
